Obituary: Dennis Sciama 1926–1999
Dennis Sciama played a significant role in the emergence of cosmology as a mainstream branch of physics. His scientific interests had an unusually broad span, from fundamental questions in quantum physics and relativity, to the interpretation of astronomical data, especially regarding observations of interstellar and intergalactic gas. He was among the first to see the connections between such diverse fields, and in this respect invites comparison with one of the fathers of modern cosmology, the Russian Ya B Zel'dovich. He was an inspiring director of research and his former PhD students, and their students, occupy many of the leading positions in astrophysics worldwide.
